Thailand has reaffirmed its position as a cornerstone of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) by hosting the 36th Working Group meeting for the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP). Held on January 14, 2026, at the EGAT Headquarters, the meeting was chaired by Mr. Prasert Sinsukprasert, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy.
Key Milestones Achieved:
- Expansion to Phase 2: The project is officially moving into its second phase, doubling the multilateral power trade capacity from 100 MW to 200 MW.
- Historic Signing: A major breakthrough was reached with the signing of the Wheeling Charge Agreement between the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) of Malaysia, and Electricité du Laos (EDL).
- Clean Energy Flow: This project facilitates the transmission of clean hydropower from Laos to Singapore, utilizing the existing grids of Thailand and Malaysia.
Strategic Benefits for Thailand:
Beyond regional cooperation, Thailand directly benefits by generating revenue through Wheeling Charges (transmission fees). This initiative not only strengthens collective energy security but also serves as a vital engine for sustainable economic growth across the ASEAN region.
